In response to demand, the WTC Committee has decided to run a series of 5km handicap races. The races will take place after the Saturday cycles (Jamie is scheduling runs off the bike anyhow; these races will just make the run more enjoyable!). Details of the first race are set out below.
RACE 1: Date: 25th of May 2013
Time: 12:45pm (after the club cycle - Jamie will give you time to change!)
Location: Front of Ashford National School
The good news is that each runner will set their own handicap time,
so fast or slow it's entirely up to you!
You decide what time you start. For example, if you think you can run
the 5km in 20 minutes you should start at 1:10pm.
The race finishes at 1:30pm. The person who finishes precisely on or
closest to 1:30pm wins.
The twist is that you will not be allowed to run with a watch,
garmin, ipod etc. (i.e. anything with a clock). A mobile phone may be
carried in case of emergencies; however it must be turned off unless
actually needed for an emergency call. Anyone caught checking the time
will be disqualified.
So in essence the winner will be the runner who is the best judge of
pace, not necessarily the fastest runner.
Please ensure that you arrive at the start at least 10mins before
your start time, e.g. if you plan to take 20mins then be there at
If you arrive late you will be able to run; you'll just have to run
faster if you still want to finish in contention! There will be no
allowances made in the timing for latecomers, the winner will be the
runner finishing nearest 1:30pm - regardless.
Brendan Buck will organise and steward. We need two other volunteers.
its great to have a challenging run off the bike and I can certainly feel it in my legs this morning.
Paula finished about 5 minutes ahead of her expected time end everyone else was 3-4 minutes ahead of their expected time. Deirdre was fastest on the day coming home in about 18 minutes. The course measures a little over 4.7k so we will have to amend our expected times slightly in future.
