Folks,

The New to Tri spins will commence this Saturday the 10th of October and will run until the 25th of June. The rota is detailed below and the normal rules apply, if the Saturday that you are allocated doesn't suit, please stick up a post a couple of weeks beforehand and request a swap with another club member.

I have also provided some guidelines, which will hopefully ensure a level of consistency week on week.

Before setting off:
1. Ascertain if there are any non-Wicklow Tri member’s in the group, if there are make sure that you inform them that they are not covered by the Club / TI Insurance and they are riding as their own risk.

2. If there is anyone on their first spin make sure their tyres are at the appropriate pressure, breaks work and helmets is securely on. (i.e. not hanging off the back of their head)

3. Explain what you plan to do, in terms of distance (all riders need to be able to cycle 40km),cover basic communication & safety e.g. calling out pot holes, pointing out hazards, shouting 'car up/down', using hand signals, never riding more than 2 abreast, not crossing the white line, etc

4. If you have a large group with a mix of experienced “recovering” cyclists & new cyclists you might consider splitting the group before you start. Alternatively suggest that the experienced riders might "under gear" to ensure the pace is kept between 20kmph - 22 kmph.

On the bike:

5. Try to keep the speed between 20kmph to 22kmph, you may have to tell some people to slow down & encourage others to go slightly faster.

6. If there is anyone really struggling, spend some time cycling with them to see if you can help identify any particular issues they are having, new cyclist often struggle with selecting the appropriate gear and getting the right cadence

7. If the riders get split up on climbs, make sure the group stop at the top of the climb to re-group.

8. Stop half way round, many new cyclists are not comfortable with eating or drinking while on the bike. Use the break to talk about the importance of eating & drinking while cycling.

9. If there is anyone consistently struggling to keep pace, rather than holding the full group back it is a good idea to let the group go up the road and at an agreed point get them to do a “u turn” & then cycle back to you, during this period it is advisable that you stay with the individual who is struggling & encourage / support them.

10. Very important At the end of the spin make sure that any newbies are aware that we head to Mount Usher for Coffee
