This gem of a video was unearthed by one of our members, its Ireland first ever televised triathlon starting from Greystones in 1983 featuring our very own John Darcy.

I had a quick chat with John this morning and he filled me in on some background information , the winner of the event got to go to Kona to compete in the IM world championships which was only 2 weeks after this event, so not exactly ideal preparation :) . As it turns out the eventual winner got shin splits and couldn’t go.

The Swim
It was an era before, wetsuits, goggles and swimming lessons by the looks of things :) . Have a look at John’s technique of rounding the boat in a different direction to everybody else at 17.15 John assures me that he was the only one going the right direction  . After seeing what he does to Gordon Murray, I will definitely be staying out of his way in the Harbour

The Bikes
The bikes only had 10 gears, 2 rings on the front and 5 sprockets on the back, today most of us have 20 gears. So you had a really limited gearing ratio, hence this why most of them ended up pushing their bikes up the Devil’s Glen.

T2
T2 was in Lynhams of Laragh, instead of having to rack your bike you left it with a nice lady who looked after it, this is definitely a feature that we could ask TI to reintroduce B) The speed of the transition didn’t seem all that important as all competitors got offered a cup of tea or a pint !

Nutrition
On the run competitors were offered
a Mars bar & Miwadi orange, sure what more would you want :)

Anne McFadden asked me to put this post up again, she watched the race in 1983 from the beach in Greystones and she was inspired to complete a triathlon, now it did take her 35 years to get around to it, but she nailed CK last weekend, well done Anne. :cheer:

Remember to check out John Darcy's swimming "technique" at 17.20 mins. Also for those of you doing Dublin 70.3 tomorrow, you should be very thankful that you don't have to cycle up Devil's Glenn on a steal bike with 10 gears..

Enjoy.
