On Wednesday 15 June the first of this year's Aquathon Series takes place in Bray. For those of you new to the club, these races are hugely important for several reasons:
They are a highly important source of income for the club; these races help pay for your coaching, for example. I was asked recently how membership was so cheap - these races are a huge contributing factor towards that.
As we host athletes from many other clubs, it helps bolster the club's reputation.
They are great, beginner-friendly races where you get to practice your open-water swimming, transition out of the wetsuit and run.
In order to run a good and safe race, we need marshals. Usually we have enough non-racing marshals to run the race meaning that many club members can help out before and afterwards but still partake in the race. I hope this is the case this year but I really need to know in advance who will be there and in what capacity (do you plan on racing or not). As this is my first time as Race Director for this event, I'd really appreciate as much help as possible with it.
I will be there from 5pm to start setting up, registration will be open from 6-7pm, race start will be 7:30pm.
If you haven't marshalled one of these events before, don't worry - you will be given a specific and straightforward task to do on the day so there's no experience necessary. Or if you have family members you can rope in to marshalling (especially if you plan to race), all the better!
So can you please let me know of your availability by replying below - can you let me know (a) if you plan on racing or not and (b) what time you expect to be there (roughly).
In particular, we need:
Kayakers - if you own or can operate a kayak safely, Debs will be delighted to have you on her team
Someone with a van - we need to collect the equipment from the lock-up (please co-ordinate with Garry, our quartermaster)
Please note: due to a complaint last year, part of the terms of our license for this event is that we cannot park on the promenade as we have done so in previous years. I will ask the Martello if they can put out cones to reserve some parking spots but in general please do not attempt to park on the promenade or our license for subsequent events may be revoked.
