Active Recovery - By Coach Simon Ward
With Offical Wicklow Tri Training now on hold till Mid October it's time to think of the End of season break. Do athletes need it?
Just in case you were thinking of getting straight back into training for next year, here is the BTA reasoning on why you should have a few weeks of active recovery.
The Kenyan Runners swear by it - 'Nearly every Kenyan Runner rests starting the month of October, with most not resuming training until December or January' (Tanser 1997), yet top triathletes now look to race almost all year long combining an Australian & European season back to back.
This is also seen at club level with many multidiscipline athletes (especially juniors) under pressure to compete for their running club in X-Country and swim in galas throughout the winter. Many athletes will go straight from the Triathlon season at the end of September/ October straight into X-Country, mountain biking and Masters swimming events.
For the following reasons it might be wise to take a break:

There are 25 people racing, so thats 5 teams of 5. The lowest combined time will win a prize, which will be presented at the 5th Year Anniversay at the end of the season.

Winter has come and gone, with the roads thawing and the days getting longer, more and more triathletes have started venturing into the Wicklow mountains. But how many realise how dangerous this can be, especially by themselves!
Something else has awoken, it has been in hibernation for the last year… it awakens with a hunger… A hunger for triathletes!!
The BEAST of the EAST is on the prowl again, and we are once again looking for some brave triathletes to help beat it back up into the mountains for another year!!!!
Wicklow Triathlon Club with its headline race sponsor 53 Degrees North is proud to announce the opening of registration on Sunday 22nd of March at 7pm (Only 300 places available)
